Christian Education

We think our Christian Education Program is one of First Presbyterian’s greatest strengths. We have programs designed for all ages.

CHILDREN: In the last few years children’s Sunday School has been a priority, as evidenced by our Rotation Workshop mode: SS Discipleship. Children study Bible stories for four Sundays: becoming more familiar with the story and considering its meaning through drama, art, theater and games. The stories are carefully chosen and sequenced so that during the years a child attends First Presbyterian Sunday School he/she learns all the key stories of our faith.

For our youngest Presbyterian, we provide a pre-school Sunday School class. During worship, a caregiver in ournursery provides consistent nurturing to children below first grade whose parents choose this option. These pre-schoolers frequently stay in worship through the minister’s children’s story and are then accompanied as a group to the nursery.

Our Vacation Bible School is a three day experience, typically outside, with a central theme enjoyed in stations of stories, music, games and crafts. We aim for a multigenerational event that also includes lots of children from the community.

At Christmas our children enjoy performing Christmas Pageant for the congregation. At that time and others, our Children’s Choir also performs.

YOUTH: Our youth groups (a high school group and a middle school group) are well attended and enthusiastically led. The Middle School Youth are actively involved in support of Grandfather Mountain’s Children’s Home and enjoy cookouts, bowling, and other fun activities. Our High School Youth are also committed to serving others through regular volunteer work at the soup kitchen and other projects. They enjoy several trips a year to the church’s Montreat House in Black Mountain for special events such as white water rafting and skiing, as well as participation in the Presbyterian Youth Conference in the summer.

The church also looks forward to the annual Brunswick Stew sponsored by the Youth and Youth Sunday in the spring, when our young people plan and lead the worship service.

CONFIRMATION CLASS: When our young people are ready to join the church (usually about eighth grade), they participate in a class led by our minister, to examine their own beliefs and learn about being Presbyterian. This class is usually held in the Spring.

ADULTS: Our adult classes are well attended and offer an opportunity for fellowship and spiritual growth. The curriculum and teachers vary from year to year. Also, weekly Bible Studies are offered at First Presbyterian. Please check the Sunday Worship Bulletin for an updated schedule.
