Lent @ FPC

What is Lent?

  • Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter.

  • Lent is a period of 40 days — like the flood of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah’s call to Nineveh to repent, and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness.

  • Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues through Easter. The 40 days of Lent do not count Sundays, as every Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

2025 Lenten Theme

We’re using materials by “A Sanctified Art” and are following the Narrative Lectionary and Luke’s gospel, focusing on familiar stories of Jesus that will invite us to navigate the polarities in our lives with more faith, intention, and openness to be transformed. Each week will explore two supposed binaries like “faith & works,” “rest & growth,” or “grief & hope.” When we explore these concepts within scripture we can find nuance and complexity and see that these dichotomies are false. In doing so we might begin to see a full spectrum instead of just black and white; we might find that God is present in between.
